Avoiding A Dodgy Situation When Traveling With Children

By Rebecca Lane

Everybody loves traveling and an air travel with your kids could be a challenging experience. Going on a long vacation with your kids and planning your journey ahead of time makes traveling less stressful. Here is some quick advice on how you can make life easier for everybody on board and enjoy that holiday with the kids.

Purchase a separate seat for your child. Yes, it is true you can cradle your kid on your lap whilst travelling, but it would be more comfortable for both of you if you have individual seats. It also makes sense to ensure your small child is kept preoccupied to avoid the inevitable cryptic complaints from his end. For entertainment and amusement, bring your child's favorite toys and games, and if you could, a portable DVD player could add to the little one's entertainment factor. There normally would not be enough food available on the plane, so you would want to bring fruit, nut, milk, cheese and other nutritious food and beverages for your little one; sugar is an absolute no-no unless you are comfortable with your child getting into a kerfuffle due to hyperactive behaviour.

Don't ever forget to bring spare diapers and change of clothes for your kid bring a bag to put his soiled stuffs inside it to prevent its odor spread all over the plane. Generally some of the passengers sitting next to us try to pacify our toddler when it behaves irrationally. On the other hand, there are other passengers who have little patience for such an "infernal racket", and if this may be the case, you as a parent should do your best to assuage the passenger and tell them you're doing what you could to mitigate the situation. When scheduling your flight, make sure it is parallel to the normal sleeping hours of your infant. And always choose a direct flight; connecting flights would interrupt your kid's sleep patterns and likely cause chaos to ensue.

It is important that you are "on top of the situation" at all times and be solicitous if necessary if it means expediently controlling your child's tendencies to "act out." In the event of belligerent behavior, admonish them softly and do not administer any corporal punishment. Make sure your children are somehow engaged, and allow them free reign as to how they want to remain engaged. Keep the ears of your children depressurised whilst the plane lands or takes off by having them chew or drink something.

These occasions will lead to an uncomfortable situation for your kid, but the simple actions of chewing and drinking can help mitigate such a situation and ensure a trouble-free flight. Don't rule your children with an iron fist -- look at how young they are! Allow them to "run wild and free" and give them carte blanche to be themselves and make the most out of a long flight. It takes time and preparation to plan the perfect vacation.
