By Quinn Harris

Have you planned and booked your first cruise? Setting off on to the open seas is what you're surely excited about. For a first-timer, life on board a ship can be intimidating and at the same time, it's like nothing else you've ever experienced. Below are some tips and essential things you should not forget.

Floating cities are what cruise ships are like. They have many public spaces and they are also large and complex with several levels. You can find facilities like such as gyms, swimming pools, bowling alleys, restaurants and shopping facilities. It can be easy to get lost just like when you're visiting a new city.

To get your orientation, first study the map of the ship. Find out the location of your cabin and then mark it on the map. In case you get lost, mark a mental note of large structures such as restaurants and pools that will help you get your orientation. Wonder around the ship and discover the facilities that are available to the guests. Doing this may encourage to participate in activities that you usually would not get involved in. Usually there is a 24 hour buffet so try to check out various restaurants to fill your craving for food no matter what time of day. Locate the pubic restrooms and convenience stores.

Several information desks can be found so if you get lost, try not to worry. In fact, crew members are very familiar with the ship so don't be afraid to ask if you get lost. They'll be happy to suggest activities and tell you how to find them.

Have you tried looking at the cruise ship's newsletter? Suggestions for activities while you're on the ship is what you will find there. There are things to keep the adults occupied while the kids are at the pool and also suggestions for activities for children.

Make a list of the things you'd like to see and do while you're on the ship. If you like to see shows then make sure you plan for them. Arrive in plenty of time to get a good seat.

Don't forget that there will be a mandatory lifeboat drill. The chances of abandoning ship are almost zero because of all of the advanced technology on ships. Paying attention is a must even though boat travel is considered very safe.

Almost everything on the ship is included in the price of the cruise but a few things are not. On the cruise, one of the biggest expenses would be alcohol. Make sure you know how much something costs before you order it. If you are on a tight budget, then try to make a budget for yourself and stick to it.

No doubt that an experience you definitely won't forget is your first cruise. You're sure to have an enjoyable holiday as long as you orientate yourself with the ships facilities and activities.
