5 Important Tips To Help You Get Upgraded On Your Flights

By Matt Tarses

Paying up to $5,000 for a business class ticket in order to fly in greater comfort is simply not an option for many travelers. But something that very few people realize is that the fact that a lot of airlines will upgrade passengers from economy class for free if they meet certain guidelines. In order for you to take advantage of the loopholes and get your upgrade for free, then have a look at some of the things that the check in staff look for and require. Many regular travelers consider these five top tips to be the holy grail when it comes to getting something out of nothing since they come from the check in staff of some of the best-known airlines.

Tip Number One.

Look the part. Dressing smartly when you travel is considered a good idea. If you are wearing shorts and a scruffy t-shirt, then there is almost no chance of getting a free upgrade so at the very least, check in wearing a shirt and pants. Going overboard and wearing a suit is not really necessary unless, of course, you really want to. The key here is to look smart but you shouldn't look like you're trying too hard.

Second Tip.

Try to turn up early. The number of passengers that are traveling on a particular flight is what the check-in staff are aware of well in advance so they will know straight away if there are seats to spare in business class.

Third Tip.

Being polite. Have you tried putting yourself in the place of the check in staff? Would you reward a person who gives you attitude and starts shouting the odds, or someone who is pleasant and gives them the time of day. Make them remember you since there are about 250 people in the queue behind you. You may well get a pleasant surprise if you smile, use their name, flirt, and be nice.

Fourth Tip.

Be a Frequent Flier. By joining an airline's frequent flier program, the airline would then want to reward you for your loyalty which is why you are far more likely to be at the front of the queue for an upgrade. Go to the airline's website and join their program online even if you do not fly regularly. Not only will this take a minute or two, it is also well worth the time.

Fifth Tip.

Ask. They say that if you don't ask for something, you won't get it, so make sure you do - but do it at the right time. If the check in staff look stressed, and no amount of charm has elicited a smile, don't bother to ask them, wait until you get to the gate. When the counter staff ask if you have any specific seat request and if they responded well, then be cheeky and tell them you want to be in first class. You never know, it just might work.
