Tips For Traveling With Kids

By Roger Gray

Traveling with kids can sometimes be a little challenging. Long trips, both by car or plane, make a child restless and the rest of the travelers miserable. You can make traveling a fun experience. Here are some tips to use to try to make traveling with tots a bit better:

Plan ahead. It's harder to just spontaneously get in the car and drive off if you are traveling with kids. Plan your route and plan for frequent stops, too. Children do better if they can get out of the car and move around for a few minutes at least once every hour. If your child is too small to walk, get him out of his seat for a little while anyway.

Be prepared. Children have smaller bladders than you do, so they need to go more often. Children also ask questions and make noise.

Don't act surprised when you have to answer a lot of questions and make more stops than you anticipated. If you know these things before you depart, you won't be as stressed when they occur.

For long trips in a car or plane, bring along some new toys for them to play with. You can bring handheld games for older children, and some travel games for the younger ones.

Avoid books and coloring books because they can cause car-sickness. Infants aren't immune to boredom either, so make sure they have new squishy things to hold or a rattle to shake. Alternate toys to keep them interested.

Have snacks handy. Children get bored on long trips and tend to get hungry quite often. Having a few snacks available can save you money and time spent on another stop.

Bring help with you. Invite friends or other family members along on your trip. They may be able to keep your kids busy while you get a few moments here and there for yourself, so you can recuperate and refresh your mind.

Space out your activities. If you are traveling with young kids, make sure activities are spaced out. This will only exhaust them and cause them to be irritable and grumpy. Give them the chance to unwind on their own, even if they ask to spend some time at the arcade.

Try to keep as much of their normal routine as possible. Even if you allow your kids to stay up a little later while on vacation, they don't need to stay up late every single night. This will only cause more trouble when you get back home.

Traveling with kids is not easy, but it can be easier if you follow these guidelines. Put yourself in their shoes and it will be easier to plan the trip accordingly. If you don't, don't expect a pleasant trip.
