Specialty Cruises, A Different Kind Of Cruise

By Judy Miller

Any old cruise to an exotic locale doesn't have to be the kind of cruise you always plan for. Many of today's cruises offer special options for a more unforgettable experience.

With a package which may or may not include some time at a Walt Disney World resort, the Disney cruise is one of the more famous of this type of cruise.

Disney cruises offer programs for kids of all ages along with Disney entertainment and spa activities and elegant dining options for the adult family members. For the kids on board the three to eleven day cruise, there are age-specific activities for 9 in the morning until as late as midnight. For the adults, there are lounges, spas and salon facilities as well as private pools and dining. The packages visit the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Alaska, Mexico, the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. You may stay in a resort as a part of your package.

But a Disney cruise isn't for everyone and a variety of specialized options are available to cater to a wide range of interests. You can always choose the singles cruises, cruises focusing on food and wine, health and well-being, history and culture, music, science and the environment, theater and arts, special event and even musicals and performers.

The Fred Olsen line, for instance, gives their passengers the option of playing bridge all day while their friends enjoy other activities by hosting a series of cruises dedicated to bridge players. Other hobby cruises focus on computers, dancing, golf and antiques.

There is probably a cruise where the participants share in your interests, whatever hobby or sport that may be, there may even be a special guest or two who's faces you'll recognize.

There are even cruises for the holidays such as the Passover, Thanksgiving and Christmas cruises. Some specially themed cruises are hosted by well-known figures like Sam Donaldson.

If you can identify something you'd like to spend several days doing on board a ship with hundreds of strangers, chances are good you can find a cruise to do it on. Your hobby or passion with the amenities of a cruise - exotic locales, fine food and the open seas is a great combination for a dream vacation.

For those not quite sure on what piques their interests, cruises for families, honeymooners and tour destinations are also available. Simple internet searches or a consultation with a travel agent can help you identify and find the outing that will best meet your vacation needs.

Add the allure of choosing from a number of destinations and starting points, the fact that all of your costs are typically included in one package, and the ease of booking and specialty cruises may be even more attractive as a way to spend your vacation getaway.
