Cruises And Theft

By Allan Marsh

Life on a cruise ship is like no other. The whole atmosphere is very relaxed, with passengers easygoing and crews having fun. For this reason you need to be on guard to keep your valuables safe. Here are some great tips to prevent vacation cruise theft.

Before you board your ship, you'll need to sign a waiver releasing the cruise line company of any stolen property. It's going to be a big hassle is you have anything stolen while you're on the cruise. A lot of police reports would have to be filed, and the ship security will not be able to help you much. So prevention would be better so you can have a hassle-free cruise.

There are safety boxes for passengers to store their valuables. You should make use of these to keep your valuables in. Don't rely on hiding your valuable in your room; everyone knows to look under the mattress.

Don't bring too much cash with you. While you're on the ship there will be little need for cash. Your tab will be paid at the end of the cruise. Credit cards are widely accepted and many ports of call, even in foreign countries, will have bank machines. You should make a list of you credit card institutions, the card numbers, and the bank contact details. This list should be kept separate from your cards, and you may even give it to a family member for safekeeping. You should consider getting traveller's checks, and they only cost a small amount, and if they are lost or stolen, they can be easily replaced.

While 99 percent of the crew and fellow passengers are honest, there can be one or two who are dishonest. So you should keep your wallet close to you. You should make sure that a family member keeps watch over your things if you go into the pool. Pickpockets are rare, but it won't hurt to keep your wallet in your front pocket. You should never leave money or jewelry in plain sight in your room since this can tempt dishonest crewmembers. Keep track of your room key and always make sure your cabin door is securely shut.

If you see anyone that appears to be suspicious report it to security. Also have your kids understand that they should still not talk to strangers even if they are on a cruise where everyone is so friendly.

Taking a cruise is sure to be a "once in a lifetime" vacation that will bring you years of wonderful memories. You just have to take certain precautions. You should keep your valuables safe, don't bring too much money, and make sure to report anything suspicious.
