The world famous Rio de Janeiro Carnival includes a reputation of over two hundred years old. Rooted in both pagan and religious festivals, the carnival is observed through the 4 days prior to the beginning of Lent. The Rio Carnival has always been the main attraction amongst tourists. In spite of all the carnivals that occur in Brazil, it is Rio de Janeiro that is certainly referred to as the Carnival capital of the world.

The festivity begins on a Saturday, 40 days before Easter ends on a Fat Tuesday, after which Easter commences on Wednesday. The event is celebrated in the month of February, occasionally March, which usually will be the hottest time in Rio.

The Rio Carnival, as we know it currently, was developed in an effort to make the parties much more civilized in the manner of European carnivals. Face masks and abundant costumes were introduced by the upper classes who paraded them around the city roads inside their open carriages. The carnival also resembles get-togethers with drinks, food and music that carry on during the day and into the early hrs of the morning.

People emerge from their Hotels and rio de janeiro apartments into the streets and dance and sing, and all this ultimately finishes in what is known as the Samba Parade. People participating in the Samba parade are dressed up in shiny costumes and Samba dancers conduct the world renowned Latin dance forms.
