Inexpensive Vacations When Traveling By Train

By Erin Song

If you would like to see the countryside, and you don't feel up to worrying about gas or new routes, the easiest thing to do is to go by train. Imagine the joy of just stowing away your luggage and relaxing for the rest of the trip. Trains offer snack cars, sleeping cars and dining cars, and they therefore allow you to enjoy your trip without worrying about anything.

Train travel is not as popular as it once was in the United States, but there are train stations in every large city and in many small cities along the way. Today, most people travel by plane and by car. If you decide to travel by train, make sure you plan enough time to get to destination, since trains are a little slower than other forms of transportation. But for those who are looking to enjoy not only reaching their destination, but also the journey, train travel is by far the best.

Major cities including New York, Boston, Washington DC, Chicago, San Francisco, and Dallas all have train stations that operate every day. But, you will be able to find stations in small towns also. Prices for tickets will vary depending on where you want to go and which type of car you want to stay in.

Many Europeans still choose traveling by train as one of the preferred means of transportation, probably because tickets are less expensive. In fact, the Eurorail will take you wherever you want to go for one low price. With a Eurorail pass, you can stop in various countries and see the sights. The wonderful thing about having a pass is that you can continue to use it without wasting time buying any other tickets. You can travel to Spain one day, and then continue your travel to France the next day. This is certainly the preferred way to travel through Europe. You can buy a similar pass called Britrail, to travel through the UK at low cost.

Using the train as a mode of transportation when taking vacations will save money and allow you to see landscape you never thought existed. The duration of train trips varies from a few hours to a few days, depending on where you are going. If you are looking for a new way to travel, or you want to see more while traveling, train travel is the way to go. Plan your vacation in advance to allow time for travel. If you are using a Eurorail pass, obtain a schedule of the different trains so you can plan ahead. Chances are that after you travel by train once, you will go back.
