Greek Hotels On A Mediterranean Holiday

By Clifford Gill

Greece is a tourist destination, so it has plenty of hotels. Its Mediterranean location is an ideal holiday spot, and it is still seeing tourism increase year after year, even though it has been steadily increasing by 10% a year for decades. It is the site of the first Olympic Games and the recent holding of this big event there plus the Eurovision Song Contest only refocused the world's attention to the country.

Greece is one of the countries with a big tourism industry, and even with continuous constructions the hotel business can barely keep up with the demand. Consequently, Greek hotel classification is often misleading. In Greece, hotels are ranked as Category A, or B and so on, and not ranked with stars like in the rest of the world. The problem is that that because the classification system is numerical with the number of rooms a factor, the categories are sometimes not compatible with the reality because some Category A for example are considered not up to par with others in Category B or even C.

If you are a tourist, you should know what things to look for in a hotel. Take a look at the facilities. Is there any building work going on? What are their policies with regard to children? How are the rooms equipped and furnished? Is it close to what you've come to see? And many more. Most of your questions can be answered by websites that are dedicated to featuring and reviewing hotels all over the world, and you can also visit the websites of each particular hotel.

One thing you do need to realize is that, as an English speaker, you may find you are only able to book at quite big hotels. Smaller hotels will often rely on agencies to act as a go-between and translate into Greek for them, which can push up the cost of staying there.

In order not to put yourself in a precarious situation, make a confirmed reservation with a hotel in your destination instead of trusting your luck upon your arrival. The exceptionally high demand means that in peak season all the decently-located hotels can easily end up full, leaving you to wander around aimlessly for hours trying to find something. It is a simple matter and a prudent move on your side to arrange a hotel booking before boarding a plane.
