Cruises: Making Sense Of The Options

By Clifford Gill

Many people see cruises as the perfect type of vacation for the couple or even for the whole family. But, there are so many cruise destinations that choosing is sometimes overwhelming. The best way to bring down the number of choices is to only look at destinations you really would love. At this point, you will need to decide where you want to go, what time of year you want to go, and what cruise line you prefer to use. This will help you select the best vacation options.

What destinations are best? The short answer is anywhere. Usually, when the word cruise is uttered everyone thinks of the Caribbean, but in reality there are many other wonderful destinations to choose from. Alaska is one of them. Others yet go to the Mediterranean. Of course, you will have a larger choice of packages going to South America, but it is good to keep in mind that these are not the only options.

One important thing to keep in mind is what you want to do when you get to a port. That's the biggest difference among cruises - they are very similar while on the water, but the packages can be very different when you stop on land. The Alaskan cruise packages offer a lot of adventure. Those experiences can be pretty unique. If instead you are interested in historical sites, some of the Mediterranean cruises are perfect for you. The typical stops take place in Italy, Spain and France. You should indeed custom plan your cruise according to your interests and taste.

When is the best time to go? Again, the short answer is anytime. Cruise lines organize cruises in different locations around the year. However, there's more to think about. When is the best time to relax? What is the most affordable time of year? In other words, when can you get the most for your money? Popular times to take a cruise include during winter vacation, spring vacation, or the summer. But, some of the best deals can probably be found during off-peak times such as the fall.

What cruise line should you choose? As a last consideration, you need to choose the cruise line you want to travel with. Some might not offer packages in some of the destinations you want to visit, so they can be scratched off the list. Others might specialize in packages that are customized for singles, families or couples. If you're taking a family on a cruise, you should definitely avoid using a cruise line that attracts singles. Some might offer amenities that you definitely want to take advantage of, others might offer amenities that you really don't want to pay for. Once you know when and where you want to go, and which cruise line fits your needs, making the final arrangements is going to be a piece of cake.
