How To Conduct Children Through Airport Inspection

By Clifford Gill

Airport authorities all throughout the world are strict in enforcing security measures in their continuing effort to ensure the safety of plane travelers. They will not ask you to do anything that will separate you from your child or children.

Inspection of children in airports is a sensitive issue and the Transport Security Administration (TSA) people are trained to be circumspect in doing their job. They are especially amiable and pleasant when dealing with children. If your child becomes uncomfortable or upset, security officers will consult you about the best way to relieve your child's concern.

NEVER leave babies in an infant carrier while it goes through the X-ray machine.

Children's things are not exempted from the inspection and must go through the standard security procedure. Examples include: diaper bags, blankets, and toys.

Equipment and things used by or intended for children are required to pass through the X-ray machines. Strollers and baby carriers, seat boosters, carrying slings and feeding implements, all must be inspected.

When you arrive at the checkpoint, collapse or fold your child-related equipment. The contents and all that are inside the pockets and baskets are to be removed for separate inspection. Plastic bins are provided to deposit such items.

If a stroller or similar equipment cannot be inspected by an X-ray machine, then the security people will examine it visually and physically.

Ask a Security Officer for help gathering your bags and child-related equipment, if you need it.

Children who are able to walk unassisted may be allowed to pass through the metal detector by themselves. In the event that the metal detectors signal an alarm as you are going through while carrying your child, you and your child will have to pass through additional screening.

Remove babies and children from their strollers or infant carriers so that the Security Officers can screen them individually.

When being inspected, do not let the person in front or at the back hold the baby for you.

Do not pass your child to the Security Officer to hold.

If a security officer is screening your child, you can help as may be necessary.

Always remember that the security people are doing the jobs that they are required and trained to do for your and everybody's sake. The least you can do is to not to make things difficult for all concerned.
