Lightweight Suitcases - 5 Tips For Packing Up Your Lightweight Suitcases

By Jessica Wray

When you pack your lightweight suitcases for a trip, it's not what you pack, but how you pack that matters. Follow some of these tips to help you pack your suitcase so that it doesn't cause you undue stress during your trip.

Travel As Lightly As Possible -- While a lot of stress can come from underpacking for a trip, overpacking can be just as problematic, leaving you managing a lot of items you don't need. When you pack, start by laying everything you want to bring out on a table or on the bed. Then remove half of the the items. Another solution is to give yourself plenty of time for packing, as our tendency as humans is to overpack when running out of time.

Do Not Fill The Case Too Fully -- It is possible that your suitcase could be subject to a random inspection by the TSA. If so, you want to make sure your case is easy to inspect. Overpacking your suitcase makes it harder to inspect and close afterwards, so avoid stuffing your case full. Also, when an inspected case is packed too fully, some of the items can drop out by accident and become lost.

Rolling Your Clothing Saves Space -- To prevent wrinkling and to save some space, roll your clothing instead of folding it. And if you roll outfits together, it makes them easier to pull out of your suitcase later while you are on vacation.

Stuff Underwear And Socks In Packed Shoes -- When you pack shoes with nothing stuffed into them, a lot of space is wasted. Also, if you're sensitive to the idea of security officials going through your personal things if your luggage is subject to a random inspection, it may save a bit of your modesty, too.

Utilize Small Toiletries -- According to the TSA, liquid, gel, and aerosol toiletries are limited to 3 ounces each in containers stored in a single 1 quart plastic bag per passenger. Because of this, make sure your toiletries are as few and as small as possible. To avoid the trouble of filling empty containers with shampoo and soap, you can instead buy many different travel size products. Or, to pack even lighter, take advantage of the hotel's provided toiletries and leave yours at home. It will mean fewer things to bring and fewer things to haul back with you at the end of your trip.
